How to be your own life coach (Part 2 – Career & Finances). Feel free to add your own tips as a comment.

3 Career Tips

1. Decide what’s important to you about your career. When is the last time you actually looked at your career and assessed it in your own way rather than what your manager has been telling you what you should be doing? Too often we get caught in a career path because we started something years ago that was suitable then, but is it still what you really want to do now?

As the saying goes “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”. So be true to yourself, take stock and set yourself career goals.

2. Own your development. Be proactive about your own performance, development and career progression. No one else will do it for you. Identify training courses that you may need to go on to gain new skills.

3. Get a mentor or buddy. Find people that have achieved the same career goal that you want to achieve and ask them how they did it. You’ll be surprised at how people are willing to share and help – don’t be shy to ask.

3 Finance Tips

1. Set financial goals. Make the goals motivating and truly right for you. Make sure it include plans to save and stick to it.

2. Become your own accountant. List all your monthly income and expenses. When listing expenses prioritise them into essential, important and luxury. This will help you identify where you may need to cut down and will also help you understand where you stand financially so that you can make better financial decisions.

3. Don’t buy what you can’t afford. Avoid keeping up with the Jones’ or letting your expenses rise unnecessarily.
